How Zhalinska fled

"I benefited from the fact that in the spring of 2024, female servicewomen were granted leave with the right to travel abroad, including on tourist vouchers," she said.

Zhalinska said she bought a tourist voucher to the Czech Republic and obtained a second passport without informing her military unit. With this passport, she crossed the border.

She had previously found carriers to get from Lviv to Poland. They helped her find those who would help her cross the Polish-Belarusian border.

From Minsk, she flew to Moscow.

"Today, many people qualify my actions as a flight to Russia, but I would not consider it a flight. I would call it a return to my homeland, my historical homeland. I am a Russian by nationality, my hometown is the city of Primorsk in Zaporizhzhia Region of the Russian Federation. I have always been a Russian native," she claimed in an interview with propagandists.

Zhalinska was a multiple medallist at the Ukrainian rowing championships.
