Famous sportsman and football fan perished at the front

Another representative of the Ukrainian sports community sacrificed himself in the battles against the Russian invaders. Pavlo Unguryan served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a lieutenant.
Unguryan was a well-known sportsman before the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, the Sports Committee of Ukraine reported on Facebook.
In January 2025, the life of Pavlo Unguryan, the Armed Forces of Ukraine soldier who was a titled Ukrainian athlete, was cut short. He voluntarily went to the front soon after the invasion of Russian troops in 2022. The defender of the country took his last battle in the Kupiansk sector.
Who Unguryan was
Since childhood, Pavlo Unguryan has been seriously involved in sports, practicing pankration. He repeatedly won Ukrainian championships and competitions in Chernivtsi region.
In addition, Unguryan loved football. He did not play professionally, but he devotedly supported the Bukovyna club.
In January 2025, while performing a combat mission in the Kupiansk sector of Kharkiv region, Pavlo Unguryan sustained life-threatening injuries from an enemy FPV drone. The soldier was buried in the village of Komarivka. The 27-year-old Pavlo left behind his wife and daughter.
